This is one of our many SAQCC-Fire Accredited training courses for individuals interested in registering as a Fire Detection and Alarm System Cabler.

This training course is the 2nd component for the Fire Detection and Alarm System Cabler and is provided for persons who require knowledge of Fire Detection and Alarm System Cables and their application for Fire Detection and Alarm Systems.

Types of support methods of cables is presented.

Learners who have completed this course will have a thorough working knowledge of the various types of cables and conduit used in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems, and understand how to install cables and conduit.

Competency levels are tested with as much practical exercises as possible minimizing the amount of written tests.

The prerequisites for the Cabling and Conduit training course are as follows:

  • ABET 3 in Literacy
  • Evidence of having successfully completed the “Safety, Workshop Practice and Hand Tools” course in the form of a certificate from an approved SAQCC Fire training facility

Module 1 - Cables and Cabling

1.0 - Identify different cable types

  • Communication cables Cat 5, mylar etc
  • Linear heat cable

1.1 - Installation of cables

Specific topics addressed:

  • Determine safe cable routes
  • Avoidance of electrical cables
  • Separation of cables from other services
  • Know how to run cables on a tray
  • Run cables on cable ladders
  • Run cables in trunking
  • Run cables in conduit
  • Run cables through walls
  • Run cables through floors
  • Bury cables in the structure of the building
  • Pulling cable off of a drum
  • Bend radius of cables

1.2 - A class and B class wiring

Specific topics addressed:

  • Identify the difference of "A" class wiring and "B" class wiring
  • Know the difference between zones and loops
  • Understand the separation of the outgoing leg and the return leg of the cable

1.3 - Cable schedules and Labelling of cables

Specific topics addressed:

  • Read different cable schedules and cable drawings
  • Understand the importance of labelling cables
  • Determine the different methods of labelling and identifying cables
  • Understand cable numbering

1.4 - Cutting and stripping of cables

Specific topics addressed:

  • Understand the correct tools for cutting of cables
  • Understand the correct tools for stripping of the cables
  • Cutting cables to the correct length


Module 2 - Cable Support Methods
